It’s safe to say that it’s a lot easier (and perhaps more common) to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, stressed and frustrated in our day to day lives. The idea of stillness, of being present, and of being satisfied with what’s in front of you - is so much easier when we achieve balance in our life.
Juggling work with family responsibilities, while simultaneously taking care of ourselves - be it physically or spiritually - adds up fast! Sometimes, we don’t realise how quickly our backs have been pushed against the wall and we end up burnt out, depressed, or just completely unsatisfied.
So, to avoid getting to that point, or - if you’re already there… we have some tips and tricks on how to achieve and maintain balance in your life.
The first is to simply acknowledge the plain fact that you are not superhuman. You cannot achieve 36 hours of work in a 24 hour day. You have to balance your limited resources (read: time and energy) with your needs (food and sleep!). Once you realise that it's ok that all you can do today is exactly that, all you can do today - you will let go of unrealistic expectations for yourself.
The second trick is to be really clear and honest with yourself about where your priorities lie. People do this differently. There’s the infamous ‘oranges’ where people label their respective oranges as ‘work’, ‘family’, ‘friends’, ‘working out’, etc. and then order them in accordance with their importance. The idea is that you can only really have three balls in the air at one time, and these should be your focus. But, don’t fret, you can change which oranges are top-priority as often as you want! Another idea is to sit down at the beginning of the week and write down your 3 biggest goals to achieve that week.
If you aren’t already, make sure you are scheduling time for yourself. Put it in your calendar and don’t back out of it! Treat it with the same commitment you would treat an important business meeting or urgent doctor's appointment. Be intentional with it, and use it for something you know will feed your soul and leave you feeling energised. It could be simply taking the time to start that new book you’ve been wanting to read, or taking a long walk somewhere new. Whatever it is, it’s time for you and you only - so make sure you turn off your phone!
We hope these small tips and tricks help you in your journey to find balance. It’s important to reflect on what tools you find ground you the most, and implement the ones that work for you in your day to day life!
